Your ‘Summer Virtual Challenge’ is to get to the Games’ main venue – The Stade de France – before opening ceremony starts on Friday 26 July. There are 5 challenge options – each with start point from a previous Euro Olympic host city. You choose – and take on the associated challenge distance to Paris. 1
Antwerp
Route
200 miles
1920 HOST CITY
The Games were awarded to Antwerp to honour the suffering that had been inflicted on the Belgian people during the war. During the Opening Ceremony, the Olympic flag, with the five rings signifying the universality of the Olympic Games and the union of the five continents, was raised for the first time. The Olympic oath was taken for the first time by an athlete on behalf of all competitors, and doves were released as a symbol of peace.
2
London
Route
300 miles
1908 / 1944 / 2012
Host City 3 times – more than any other!
The 1908 Games were the first to have an opening ceremony and was marred by politics and controversy. in 1948 after much debate over the need for a sports festival when many countries were still recovering from WW2 the Games were popular and provided relief from the strains of war.
More recently – the 2012 Olympics in Stratford were considered as one of the best ever !
3
Munich
Route
450 miles
1972 HOST CITY
Overshadowed by the Munich massacre in the second week, in which eleven Israeli athletes & coaches at the Olympic village were killed by Palestinian Black September members. The motivation for the attack was the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The West German Government had been eager to have the Munich Olympics present a democratic and optimistic Germany to the world, as shown by the Games’ official motto “the cheerful Games”
4
Berlin
Route
600 miles
1936 HOST CITY
To outdo the 1932 Los Angeles Games, Hitler had a new 100,000-seat stadium built and were the first Games to be televised. Hitler saw the Games as an opportunity to promote his government and ideals of racial supremacy
Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals and became the most successful athlete to compete in Berlin. For the next 12 years, no Olympic Games were held due to the immense world disruption caused by WW2.
5
Rome
Route
800 miles
1960 HOST CITY
Rome had previously been awarded the administration of the 1908 Summer Olympics, but following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906, the city had no choice but to decline and pass the honour to London. The 1960 Games were the first to be fully covered by television and also the first time the newly chosen Olympic Anthem was played.
South Africa participated – but not for another for 32 years until apartheid ended.
